How are Military Drones Powered?

Technology has made life simpler for man. Gone are the days when soldiers had to face the enemy attack one to one and lose one’s life during the process.

They are powered by jet and electrical engines, propellers, gas, and batteries.

As far as aerial attacks are concerned, the piloted aircrafts posed threat to the life on getting too close to the enemy camp or be within their radar. It was easy to target such aircrafts and the pilots either lost their lives or became prisoners after their planes crashed on bombing.

Modern military has adopted effective aids like combat drones that help in fulfilling the military duties without loss of life.


What are drones?

Drones, as we know, are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and the ones used in combat are unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAV). Military drones are high endurance, long flying time (33 hours) and high altitude scaling objects (around 62,000 ft).

Military drones are of many types and sizes. Companies like Boeing, General Atomics, Lockheed Martin and others are leaders in providing combat drones to army. The various models are QF-4 Aerial Target, RQ-11B Raven, MQ-1B Predator, MQ-9 Reaper, RQ-2A Pioneer, RQ – 7B Shadow, RQ-4 Global Hawk and more. Black Hornet is a drone that falls in nano-drone category, weighing just32 grams. Nonetheless, it has great navigational capability that covers areas beyond GPS zone.



Uses of military drones

Military drones help the army personnel is many ways. Their prime use is for spying on enemy base. However, since they are unmanned vehicles, during combat the military uses them for air strikes. Even though the soldiers manually operate and control the drones, they are far away from the actual location of attack and thus safe.

Combat drones help the army to make strategic plans of attack by pinpointing the location of the enemy base and various locations of planted bombs, missiles, etc.

Advanced programming enables the military to equip the drones with various ammunitions like air-to-surface missiles, air-to-air missiles, cluster bombs, guided bombs, anti-tank target missiles and others in order to launch targeted attack on the enemy. It is easier to conduct these aerial attacks from remote locations out of enemy radar.

UCAV help in pre-warning the soldiers of enemy location so that they steer clear from that zone. Besides this, in case of attack in civilian area and damage to buildings and residences, it is easier to trace people trapped inside and rescue them.

As the drones have high altitude flying range, they can go unnoticed by the enemy and yet accomplish their mission of tracing enemy camp location or perform successful air strike.



Drones as attack weapons

Military use drones as attack weapons since they are easy to maneuver through program and the operator remains safe far away from destruction zone.

Precisely guided missiles find the target accurately and many countries use these drones for targeted attacks that are deadly and effective.

Drones are in use by all the three US military forces, but particularly useful for air force since they can save their piloted aircrafts and life, and still accomplish the task by launching air-to air or air-to-surface missiles.

Modern day combat uses drones to protect their personnel and get the desired effect of targeted attack with utmost precision.

Usually, the UAV has a battery charge that lasts for 30 minutes before next recharge. However, Hydrogen fuel cells increase the flying time by around 8 hours. These cells take less than 15 minutes to charge after landing. Absence of any moving parts make these fuel powered cells drones maintenance free and with no lubricants.
